VIDEO - WHATS NEW AT THE LONGHORN CLASSIC

The Longhorn Classic wants our breeders to know, your birds’ health and wellbeing is our #1 priority. Our goal is to have some of the best one loft race statistics in the country, so your hard-earned money isn’t being wasted.

Last season, we had excellent numbers during the race season, but we know we need to increase the number of birds that go to the first race. Below are some changes we are making to increase those numbers.

2024 CHANGES

  1. We’ll have a 20’X30’ aviary for the newest birds to use during their quarantine period. This is so they can learn to use the chute and traps before going into the main group. This year the main group will have open loft daily instead of being in an aviary. Getting the birds out earlier to locate also gives breeders a chance to replace birds that go missing off the loft.
  2. Lights will be used on the birds this year to help manage the molt.
  3. On August 1st, 9th and 10th flights will be pulled and lights turned off. Birds will be locked down for 4 weeks, during this hottest time of the year. This will help all birds go through a body molt before training starts.
  4. On October 1st, we will start road training, which is a month later than our previous 2 years. This is when it starts cooling down in the mornings.
  5. At the end of the season, we aren’t focused on a big final race party. If the birds are not ready or winds and weather are not right, we want to be able to wait and not take chances on having a bad toss or race. The welfare of the birds is our #1 priority.
