LOFT FLY 5/05

Birds were out flying today.  While in the process of letting the birds into the loft, a cooper hawk came and spooked the birds.  There was 1 casualty from the visit, and the owner of that bird has been notified.

While we are sure that the birds rushed into the loft and possibly jumped the antennas, we also see birds sitting on other buildings on the property.   We do see a difference in numbers between yesterdays clocking results and today's clocking results.  We are not going to push the birds out into cages to have them trap again because they are very stressed out after the hawk attack.

We will let the birds out again hopefully tomorrow depending on the wind.

You KNOW what you could WIN at the HOOSIER!!

There are currently over 3500 birds in the loft as of today.  So far the first 5 weeks of birds have been out of the loft.  Weather has been the biggest factor in delaying this process.  We are hoping to have groups 6 & 7 out by Wednesday.  They are calling for 3 days of rain with strong winds.  After this week it looks like the extended forecast shows our temperatures being warmer and more stable and less rain.  We will have another inventory tomorrow by having the birds run through the clock before feeding.
The health of the birds this year have been outstanding.  With over 3500 birds currently in the loft, less than 2% have been removed.  If you have a bird that is sick or injured, we will contact you to send a replacement.

The deadline for accepting birds is May 15th.  Since the 15th falls on a Monday, we will extend the deadline to the end of that week.  So birds will need to be at the loft by May 20th.

We have made some changes in some products as well as our feed for the 2023 season.  The feed we are using is the Vandenabeele mix by Beyers.  Using this feed we already see a difference in the birds.  They are less reluctant to fly, and some are already grouping up when loft flying.  Another change we made was to the loft.  After several Sunday morning conversations with our friends Sam Younan and Steve Shoptz, they convinced us to add a raised ridge on the roof.  This took 3 days and 5 workers to complete, but we can already tell the difference in the loft.

As a reminder, if you have shipped birds without a payment they will be listed under Unassigned Breeder until a payment is made.  All birds are to be paid for upon arrival.
Please include information in your boxes as to the loft name when shipping along with payments.

APRIL UPDATE

There are just 3 weeks left to get your birds in for the 2023 season!  We currently have over 3150 birds in the loft.  This week has been quite busy with over 20 boxes arriving on Tuesday afternoon, another 30+ arriving Wednesday, and close to 30 on Thursday.  We also have breeders dropping birds off almost daily as well.
We have been battling some major fluctuations in weather with daily changes including high winds, rain, or drastic temperature changes from 30's all the way up to the 80's.  It has definitely been a roller coaster of weather the past few weeks.

There are several birds that have arrived in the last few weeks with no payments.  As we have said before, birds sent without payment will not be entered under your loft name.  Any birds received without payment will be entered under an unassigned loft name and will not be viewable.  Once payment is made, the bird(s) will be transferred to the correct team name. If you have sent birds with no payment you will need to contact the office in order to see them under your loft name.  We cannot stress enough how important it is to provide information in or on your box as to the loft name for which the birds belong.  There have been several occasions this year where birds have arrived with no name on the box, only an address, no paperwork, or payments.   Our time is much better spent taking care of the birds, instead of tracking down payments or owners of birds.  With so many boxes coming in daily, it is very helpful if you provide information.

We would like to Thank everyone who has sent birds for the 2023 season so far.  The quality is outstanding in the birds that have arrived, and breeders are definitely sending their best!   There are also currently over 100 birds listed on the "For Sale" list from various fanciers.  The breeder's name is listed under the "Bird Name" so you will know who's bird you will be purchasing.  As a reminder, birds from the For Sale list will have any "prize and/or auction money" split between the buyer and breeder.  Buyer is responsible for all fees.  While we will put together "kits" of birds once all of the For Sale birds have arrived, you can certainly put together your own kit of birds by choosing 6 birds from the For Sale list for $1000.  Please see official rules page on the website for more information regarding For Sale birds.

We would also like to thank everyone for their patience over the past few weeks while we dealt with a pressing family issue.  While our communication during this time was minimal, please be aware that we continued to make the birds health and well-being a priority.  We are beginning to get back into a normal daily routine and will get back on track with updates, pictures, and videos.

We hope everyone enjoys their weekend.  As always if you have questions, please feel free to reach out to the office during business hours 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. at 219-733-0011

APRIL 1ST
Thank you to all those that have shipped birds to the Hoosier Classic for the 2023 season already.  We currently have over 1700 birds in the loft.  The health so far has been quite good, and the birds are all adjusting well.  They continue to work the traps and have access to the aviary deck most days. The birds have been receiving a Nourishing Tea from Vita King Products in their water a few times a week right now.  Our goal is to support the growth of their immune systems after arrival by offering natural immune boosters.  They are also receiving Beyers feed as well as Jovati Mineral Grit.
We have had 2 days of rain and very high winds last night and today.  The wind has been as strong as 75 mph last night and did not get much better throughout the day today.  While our temperatures will gradually increase throughout the week, we are expected to see a lot of rain as well.

Sunday 4/1, Big Andy and Robert Rotiroti will be collecting birds from Canada for the Hoosier Classic at Bill Weima's.  If you would like to ship please contact Andy or Robert, they will be bringing the birds down by next weekend.  If you ship the birds with Robert & Andy, shipping is free.

There is approximately 6 weeks left of accepting birds.  Now is the time to get your birds in.  Please remember to include your perch fees as well as information regarding your loft name.  It is always best to ship birds on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.  Please do not overcrowd boxes.  It stresses the birds and can become overheated inside of the box. If you plan to deliver birds, we are available Monday - Friday 8:30 am  - 4:00 pm., if you would prefer to come on the weekend please call to let us know what day and time.  There is not always someone in the office on the weekends, this will allow us to make sure someone is to accept the birds.   As always feel free to call the office if you have any questions, 219-733-0011.

LAST WEEK OF MARCH
This past week we have reached just over 1400 birds in the loft.  Group 2 recieved thier booster vaccine and merged together with group 1.  Overall, we are very happy with the health of the birds.  We know it's early, however they are looking great.  There are a few new Vita King Products we have been working on and have been implementing these into our daily routines.  So far, so good!!

The daily schedule right now is as follows: by 7:00 am the birds are in the aviaries learning the traps.  The loft is then cleaned, and all drinkers are sanitized.  Birds are fed at 2:00 pm every day, and we have been using the new feed this year from Beyers, as well as the Jovait Grit and minerals are offered daily.

The week ahead.....
Tomorrow we will attempt to show a test inventory of weeks 1, 2, & 3, to ensure the clocks are working properly.  We will do a hand inventory later this week to verify all chip rings are correctly banded to each bird.  Once the chips are confirmed we will cover the rings of the birds.   Although birds are sprayed upon arrival for external parasites, while they are being handled this week they will also be dipped for external parasites which usually has a lasting effect for up to 90 days.

For Canadian Fanciers...
Shipping to the Hoosier Classic is Free!!
Robert Rotiroti & Big Andy will be collecting birds this week for the Hoosier Classic.  These birds will be delivered to us April 4th or 5th.  Please contact Robert or Andy for more details, or you can call the office for more details.  Robert will also be at Bill Weima's April 2nd and collect birds at the show as well.  All shipping fees for Canadian fanciers will be free coming to the Hoosier Classic.  Please make sure to contact Robert or Andy, as they will need band numbers ahead of time.

We would like to mention the new venture of the Upper Canada One Loft Race.  We wish both Robert & Andy the best of luck in their 1st year hosting the race. Count us in, our birds will be ready soon.

For Mexico Fanciers....
For all of our friends in Mexico wishing to participate, our agent Ernesto Garcia will be in Guadalajara in the coming weeks.  He is hoping to meet with many of you and share some news regarding fanciers in Mexico wishing to participate in the Hoosier Classic.

As a reminder, birds should be shipped only on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.  This will avoid the birds being stuck in a post office through a weekend. It is important to not overcrowd boxes.  Doing so can cause stress to the birds, damage to feathers, and also increase the temperature in the box.
Please also remember to include perch fees in the box unless payment has been made by credit card or PayPal.  As we have said in years past, our time is much better spent with the birds than trying to get fanciers to pay their perch fees.

We are available Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm if you prefer to deliver birds.  If you would like to come on a weekend, please contact the office to let us know you will be coming.

SHIPPING TIPS
Shipping young birds to any One Loft Race can be stressful.  Below are some tips to follow to help ensure your champions are arriving ready to succeed in a OLR.  The care provided at home prior to shipping is the beginning of their winning success.

As a reminder as well it is always good to ship birds Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, to ensure they arrive by the weekend and do not spend an extended amount of time in a shipping box.
And most importantly, do not overcrowd boxes.  Putting 6 birds in a 2 bird box or 13 birds in a 4 bird box is overcrowding, can cause overheating, and is dangerous to the health of your birds.

WEEK 3 OF ACCEPTING BIRDS

There is currently around 560 birds that have arrived for the 2023 season of the Hoosier Classic.  There are currently over 20 birds that have been sent with no payment and those birds have not been entered into the system.  Wincompanion shows there are 539 birds currently entered and in the loft.  As a reminder, perch fees are due when the birds arrive.

The 2 groups of birds currently in the loft are doing great, and have all adjusted nicely.  They have learned to go out into the aviary and definitely know when its dinner time.  The quality of birds so far has been great.  Fanciers are sending their BEST to compete for $1,200,000 in prizes.  For the most part the post office is moving the birds pretty quick.  We have had only about 3-4 boxes delayed over the last 2 weeks.  Many boxes are being delivered the next day which is great for the birds.

We have seen our weather fluctuate the past 2 weeks with temperatures ranging from almost 60 degrees all the way down to the low 30's.  We have had snow several times, however it usually melts within a few hrs to a day.  Over the course of the next week, our weather looks to be holding steady in the mid 30's to low 40's, which is about the normal temperatures this time of year. We should start to see a change in temperature hopefully after next week where we will begin to warm up a little.

We will be accepting birds through May 15th for the 2023 season.

Please do not over crowd boxes.  To many birds in a box can cause the inside temperature to rise, reducing quality air and causing stress.  Make sure youngsters are at least 45-55 days old before shipping.  Vaccinate youngsters at least 1 time (2 weeks) before shipping to help jump start their immune system.  Birds will be vaccinated upon arrival, however a vaccine 2 weeks before shipping will begin to build an immune system, allowing them a stronger start in the loft.

And as always, INCLUDE payment for perch fees if they were not pre paid.  We Will NOT enter birds into the system if there is no payment and they will not be permitted into the loft.  Delayed payments will also delay the bird's progress.
